Better Medicare Alliance Responds to CMS 2027 Medicare Advantage Premiums and Plan Landscape
WASHINGTON — Better Medicare Alliance (BMA), the nation’s leading research and advocacy organization supporting Medicare Advantage, today issued the following statement in response to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) 2027 Medicare Advantage premiums and plan landscape:
“Lower average premiums for Medicare Advantage beneficiaries are always good news, and we appreciate the Administration’s focus on affordability and stability heading into open enrollment. CMS’ 2027 MA policies helped support program stability and continuity of benefits after several years of pressure on the program,” said Mary Beth Donahue, President and CEO of Better Medicare Alliance. “However, we expect many seniors will continue to see changes in their coverage next year, from higher out-of-pocket costs to fewer supplemental benefits. Last year, nearly 3 million seniors were forced to find new Medicare Advantage plans even as premiums stayed low. Minimizing this sort of disruption should continue to be a priority for policymakers.”
“With Medicare Advantage serving roughly half of all Medicare beneficiaries, it’s critical that beneficiaries, policymakers, and other stakeholders understand how plan offerings are changing and what those changes mean for access and affordability. BMA will conduct a detailed review of the landscape data and share what it means for premiums, benefits, plan availability, and beneficiary choice. We look forward to sharing our findings with Congress and the Administration and working with them to protect stability and affordability for more than 35 million Medicare Advantage beneficiaries.”
CMS projects that the weighted average monthly Medicare Advantage premium will fall from $14.37 in 2026 to $12.00 in 2027. More than 99% of Medicare beneficiaries will have access to at least one Medicare Advantage plan, and 97% will have access to 10 or more. BMA will release a full analysis in the coming weeks.
