Washington, D.C. (July 13, 2016) – The Better Medicare Alliance (BMA) released a new interactive online map today representing data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) of beneficiary enrollment in Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part C, by Congressional district.
BMA is the leading advocacy coalition supporting Medicare Advantage. Medicare Advantage is the part of Medicare that presents a high value, affordable option for seniors and people with disabilities.
According to CMS data released in June, enrollment in Medicare Advantage is currently 17.3 million individuals – an 80% increase since 9.7 million individuals were enrolled in 2008. Enrollment now constitutes 1/3 of the more than 57 million eligible Medicare beneficiaries.
The map reveals that enrollment in Medicare Advantage varies by state and Congressional district. Geographic variation in Medicare Advantage enrollment can be due to many factors, including existing insurance market factors, as well as specific characteristics of each state. The map also compares Medicare Advantage enrollment numbers by state and Congressional district to enrollment in Traditional Fee-For-Service Medicare and other Medicare Health Plans including Cost Plans, PACE, and demonstrations.
“Seniors and people with disabilities appreciate the simplicity, affordability and high-value care offered by Medicare Advantage. Updated information regarding enrollment penetration by Congressional district can be hard to find. The Better Medicare Alliance is pleased to provide this up-to-date information in an easy, accessible format. We will continue to provide useful information about the demographics of Medicare Advantage beneficiaries, including, the addition of race, ethnicity, gender, and disease conditions in this new interactive map,” said Allyson Y. Schwartz, President & CEO of Better Medicare Alliance.
