Better Medicare Alliance Beneficiaries Deliver Over 100,000 Custom Letters to Congress

Seniors in our Better Medicare Alliance beneficiary network have been actively advocating on behalf of Medicare Advantage — and their voices are making a difference. Today, we are excited to mark an important milestone: More than 100,000 custom letters delivered to Congress during the budget reconciliation process and beyond. Each letter represents a story: A senior who depends on Medicare Advantage and is counting on their elected representatives to stand up for it.

These are personal, heartfelt stories written by beneficiaries from across all 50 states — sharing why Medicare Advantage matters to them, and how changes to the program could upend their daily lives. As the letters make clear, Medicare Advantage is more than just health coverage for seniors; it’s a lifeline. From managing chronic illness to recovering from cancer, or just simply trying to make ends meet in retirement, beneficiaries shared their stories with a sense of clarity and urgency.

Charles W. of Florida, a disabled Navy veteran, wrote: “I had a Medicare Advantage policy along with my [wife] who passed away from cancer at 69 years old. If it wasn’t for Medicare Advantage, I don’t know how I would have afforded her care.”

Suzanne M. in Utah wrote: “Medicare Advantage is the only way I can afford medical care to manage fibromyalgia, disc issues, thyroid issues, PTSD, anxiety, depression, lymphedema, and God forbid my cancer returns. I would literally die without medical care.”

Bert P. in Mississippi shared the following regarding his Medicare Advantage: “I would love to ask Congress to please stop Medicare and Medicaid cuts that will hurt the senior citizens as myself. I have several major problems. I’ve lost my hearing. I’ve lost one eye to glaucoma. I have prostate cancer, and I’m asking please. We need the help that these programs provide for us to be able to exist.”

And Jerry S. of Maine: “I rely on Social Security and Medicare Advantage for my literal survival. Cuts to Medicare Advantage cost me more, leaving me to have to forgo either medicine, food, or heat. I’ve worked hard all my life and contributed from my paycheck to these saving accounts since I was 16. If you cut these accounts that have my money in them, you can rest assured that the millions of seniors in this country will make sure that you are retired in the next election.”

These letters help bring the human stories behind Medicare Advantage to life — and they’re having an impact. They’re a testament to the power of seniors speaking up, fighting to protect the health coverage they depend on, and a reminder of what’s at stake. More than 34 million Americans choose Medicare Advantage for better health outcomes at a lower cost than Fee-For-Service Medicare — or more than half of the Medicare population. Protecting Medicare Advantage means protecting health coverage for seniors.
