Former Rep. Allyson Y. Schwartz, D-Pa., is landing at the the Better Medicare Alliance as its President and Chief Executive Officer.

The group was founded in December to bring together health plans, providers and advocates who want to support private Medicare Advantage plans that serve beneficiaries. Health policy strategist Krista Drobac led the group as interim executive director while the coalition searched for a permanent leader.

Schwartz served in Congress from 2005 to 2015 before seeking the Democratic nomination for governor in 2014. She lost to Tom Wolf, who then won the general election.

While in Congress, Schwartz worked on Medicare issues while serving on the Ways and Means and the Budget committees.  Schwartz served 14 years in the Pennsylvania State Senate before being elected to Congress in 2004. Before that she worked as a health service executive.

Schwartz is also a distinguished fellow at the University of Pennsylvania's Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics, a visiting fellow at the Penn Wharton Public Policy Initiative, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and co-chair of the Bipartisan Policy Center Health and Housing Task Force.

Louisiana Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, who worked with Schwartz when they were House members, said in a statement, “She is knowledgeable, insightful and fair. A veteran health policy advocate, her experience will be an asset to the Better Medicare Alliance.”
