Event Recap: Florida Senior Day 2016

January 27, 2016 1:00 pm

On January 27, the Better Medicare Alliance (BMA) sponsored the Florida Senior Day luncheon to raise awareness of Medicare Advantage, the annual rate notice and to educate seniors on how they can be advocates for Medicare Advantage. Now in its sixteenth year, Florida Senior Day (FSD) is an annual event hosted by the Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA) and United Way of Florida to help provide a platform to highlight important issues facing our senior population and advocate for their needs. About 1,200 seniors and senior advocates from across the state attended the event at the State Capitol according to organizers. Florida Senior Day is a collaborative event that includes approximately 75 statewide partners including corporate, philanthropic, and nonprofit organizations.

During the luncheon Jaime Estremera-Fitzgerald, President of the Palm Beach Area Agency on Aging, a BMA ally organization gave a rousing two-minute speech on BMA and the importance of advocating for Medicare Advantage. BMA hosted a booth during the luncheon at which 64 seniors signed up to be advocates of Medicare Advantage. New senior advocates from Florida Senior Day are being entered into BMA’s Advocacy Portal to be contacted for upcoming call to actions and events. Florida Department of Elder Affairs Secretary Sam Verghese also gave remarks about Better Medicare Alliance during the event’s press conference.
