ICYMI: New Study Finds Medicare Advantage Provides Higher Value Care for Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease

Better Medicare AllianceThursday, September 3, 2015

A new study published in the American Journal of Managed Care (AJMC) finds Medicare Advantage (MA) plans provide higher value care for diabetes and cardiovascular disease compared to traditional Medicare. The study is among a growing body of evidence that demonstrates MA is able to treat seniors with chronic conditions with more efficiency and higher quality care than traditional Medicare. As the Medicare program moves from a fee-for-service to value-based payment system, delivering high quality care at a lower cost is essential, especially for costly chronic conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Key takeaways from the study include:

  • For both diabetes and cardiovascular disease, relative resource use was lower for those enrolled in MA than for those in traditional Medicare.
  • Quality of care for diabetes and cardiovascular disease measures was higher in MA for the 4 measures examined.¬†
