Policy and Research Director

Job Description

This open position is for a senior level person in health policy.

Responsibilities

  • Senior level position in health policy
  • Oversees policy activities to include monitoring policy discussions and developments around Medicare, and Medicare Advantage specifically, and works closely with President/CEO in articulation of BMA policy positions
  • Manages BMA research activities, including oversight of research projects, coordination with contractors, and knowledge of current health policy issues and potential research topics
  • Works with President/CEO to recruit new coalition members and maintains relationship with current Allies
  • Monitors federal legislative, as well as Executive/Administrative branch policy and regulatory activities, and keeps President/CEO and other staff current and knowledgeable
  • Monitors and prepares timely summaries of other key policy events, including publications, for President/CEO
  • Produces accurate analyses, reports and presentations for President/CEO and policy audiences
  • Prepares or oversees preparation of draft policy communications documents, including issue briefs, profiles of best practices, and reviews of evidence-based findings
  • Works with communications director to shape strategic messaging around policy issues
  • Identifies trends in private sector as well as public policy and anticipates forthcoming policy discussion
  • Helps staff a policy advisory board and consults with them as needed
  • Participates in senior-level discussions on advocacy strategies
  • Represents BMA to external stakeholders and policymakers

Qualifications

  • 6-8 years of Capitol Hill, political campaign, trade association, consulting, legislative and/or health care alliance management experience
  • B.A./B.S. required, Master’s degree desirable
  • Keen understanding of health policy issues, including previous health care or health policy experience
  • Understanding of and relationship with key stakeholders and policymakers
  • Ability to represent BMA at external events, including panel presentations, roundtables and informal gatherings of stakeholders and policymakers
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Analytical thinker with the ability to translate complex issues into simple language
  • Collaborative team player that is a self-starter with the ability to lead initiatives, work independently and set priorities
